Risk and Protective Factors Affecting Suicidal Ideation of Hospitalized Alcoholics

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the risk and protective factors related to suicidal ideation in alcoholic patients. The data were collected from 215 alcoholic patients who were hospitalized in 11 mental health institutions in Deagu metropolitan area and were analyzed by frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, simple correlation analysis and stepwise regression analysis. The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, 63.3% of alcoholics attempted suicide, thus was the most important risk factor for suicidal attempts. Second it was found that women had a higher suicidal ideation than men, when socio-demographic factors were taken into account. Third, risk factors affecting suicidal thoughts include history of suicidal attempts, depression, severity of drinking problem, and anxiety. Lastly, protective factors of suicidal ideation were found to be self-efficacy, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. Based on the results, this study reinforced the importance of suicidal prevention program for alcoholics and suggest the effective intervention methods that needs to be implemented in the program.
